Overview
Jimei University (JMU), one of the key universities in Fujian Province, is a multi-disciplined university with a history of 100 years. It is located in Jimei Schools Village, Jimei, Xiamen. It was founded by the famous patriotic overseas Chinese leader Mr. Chen Jiageng (Tan Kah-Kee). Currently, it has more than 27,000 students and over 1500 faculty members consisting of more than 800 professors and associate professors.
JMU is one of the earliest universities of its kind in Fujian Province entitled to enroll international students, overseas Chinese students, and students from Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan. It has 21 colleges with 69 undergraduate programs in nine disciplines, i.e. Engineering, Agronomy, Economics, Administration, Education, Science, Literature, Law and Fine Arts. There are 13 first-level disciplines authorized to offer masters' degrees and 8 disciplines authorized to offer professional masters’ degrees. In addition, it has 2 first-level disciplines authorized to offer doctorate degrees covering 2 fields: Fisheries, Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering. It also has
1 postdoctoral research station of Fisheries Science. The university has formed a complete educational system from preparatory courses to degree programs including bachelor’s, master's and doctor’s degrees. The hallmarks of these degrees are majors such as Nautical Navigation, Marine Engineering and Fisheries.
JMU puts much emphasis on its international exchange and cooperation program. It has carried out a wide range of academic exchange and research cooperation with more than 100 universities and research institutions in more than 20 countries and regions including the United States, Canada, Australia, Britain, Germany, Italy, Japan, Korea, and Singapore.
The campus of JMU spans over 153 hectares with a floor space of over 1,000,000 square meters. In 2009, its new campus architecture group was awarded as one of “China's Top 100 Construction Projects” over the last 60 years since the founding of the People’s Republic of China (PRC), making it the only awarded university project in China. Its beautiful natural scenery, unique architectural style and pleasant climate make it the ideal place for young people from both home and abroad to study.
Its motto “Sincerity and Perseverance” is a precious spiritual heritage handed down by Mr. Chen Jiageng, the founder of Jimei Schools, which has undergone a long and glorious history and enjoys great fame far and wide.
The establishment of Fujian Free Trade Zone provides a new opportunity for further development of JMU. Being distinctive and armed with stronger international competitiveness and higher academic research level, JMU will always strive itself to be a multi-university that is open to the world.
